The same as my opinion on m|w representation in romance… it depends on who wrote it, the story, and the characters. Everything stands alone. Yes, the genre has tropes, but I don’t like to assign a “genre” caveat to what I consume and generalize an impression based on that. I just like that the BL tag allows me to quickly identify m|m centered stories and they run the gamut of being pure trash escapism or deep nuanced reflections of the coming of age queer experience. I’ll have my Michelin-starred BL with a side of BL nacho cheese fries thank you.
